Thanks Brian. I guess I'm back to using vinyl sealer again. haha. I've just never been sure which gave the best adhesion, with or without.

Do you ever use shellac as a tie coat? I find it difficult to know what makes for the best bond. My experience has been, from cutting in a around a bridge, that a coat of shellac on bare Spruce prior to nitro, makes for a good bond to the wood, with or without sealer.

What's your take on finishing over Zpoxy? I typically use Mohawk vinyl and nitro over Zpoxy but have never been 100% sold on the bond. It would seem the toothing of the Zpoxy plays a very big part.

Cheers!

I still have a jar of dewaxed super blonde in my finish room, though I seldom reach for it these days. Was a time it was my favorite sealer under nitro on spruce.

When I was applying finishes directly over epoxy resins I never used a sealer over or under it, but I left the wood surface completely covered with epoxy. If you sand back so just the pores are filled you need sealer.

I guess I just never really understood, and still don't, the point of using a specific sealer per se. After all isn't the first coat of what ever you are gong to put on... the sealer?
